Uzhgorod - the city of Ukraine, the administrative center of Transcarpathian region and area, as well as the historical center of Subcarpathian Ruthenia (Transcarpathian Ukraine). Located on the border with Slovakia.
History: Uzhgorod - one of the oldest Slavic cities. Eastern Slavic tribe of White Croatians founded their first settlements in the area of Uzhgorod to IX century, when Uzhgorod (Ungvar) turned into a protected fortress. The city has many monuments - Uzhgorod Castle (known from the XI century), Bishop's Palace (now the University Library, 1646), a Catholic church in the Baroque (1762-1767), Town Hall (1810).
In the 1930's architecture center Uzhgorod was founded by Czech architects in forms close to constructivism.
In Soviet times the city was built on the master plan, was housing, developing planting area of the city, was built by a number of public buildings and monuments.
There are Uzhgorod University, institutions and schools, local history museum, art museum, Transcarpathian museum of folk architecture and way of life, Botanical Garden, Ukrainian music and drama theater, puppet theater, Regional Philharmonic Society (former synagogue), more than 20 schools, a gymnasium, a lyceum, a number of churches.
